Here I am shopping for slippers once again. The Craftsmen I like at Sears have gone from the original $15.95 to $50!!! But, wait... it doesn't matter because, they are not available for delivery and not available for pick-up. (Why are they for sale on their website?) I can get them on eBay for $50 but, it's $14.95 for shipping. Now my $16 slippers are up to $65! (Pass.)
The thing that got me writing this page is the flag. That's right, the Amurcan flag. Some of the eBay ads were proudly displaying the Amurcan flag at the top of the ad page. Also stated in the ad is that the slippers are imported. From where is not specified so I'm going to hazzard a guess they might be from somewhere exotic like, oh I don't know, China? Definitely not made in USA.
So the apparent important significance of the Amurcan flag is that you know you are giving your hard earned cash to a fellow Amurcan. Not some sleezy ferriner. After taking their 90% markup then they will send the rest to China. I mean after all, if somebody's got to do business with Communists they may as well make a profit, right? At least you know it was a fellow Amurcan making most of the money.
I figured out many years ago I do not like doing business with flag wavers, cross flaunters or bible thumpers. After getting the stick end of a deal on a used car from a born-again Christian I realized why many can't be trusted. Part of the doctrine is that no matter what you do, if you repent in Jesus' name, you will be forgiven. Just think about the implication of that statement. I don't think the original idea was to create a safe haven for ne'er-do-wells; But, you can surely see how that basic tenet would be very attractive to someone possessed of low moral standards. They can give themselves a get-out-of-hell card for whatever they do.
Make of it what you will but, the overly extravagant display of symbology, whether patriotic or religious or whatever, makes me want to paraphrase Shakespeare: Me thinks thou doth attest too much. In other words, who you tryin' to convince?
